How frost dates shape your planting calendar
Your average last spring frost and first autumn frost decide almost every sowing date. Tender crops like tomatoes, peppers, beans and cucumbers cannot take frost and go outside after the last frost. Hardy crops like peas, spinach and lettuce can be sown a few weeks before it.
Starting seeds indoors
Slow crops such as tomatoes, peppers and onions are started indoors six to twelve weeks before the last frost, then planted out once the weather warms.
Autumn sowing
Counting back from the first autumn frost gives a second window for quick, cool-season crops like lettuce, spinach, radishes and carrots.
Adjust for your garden
These windows are typical guidance. Soil temperature, local weather and the variety you grow all matter, so check seed packets and watch the forecast.
